Altar Ego Wedding Ed: What is a groom’s cake?

It’s always funny to have couples get married when one of them isn’t from the south!  Many times we hear, “what’s a groom’s cake?” or “do we need a groom’s cake?”  In the South, and definitely in Texas, the tradition is the groom gets to select a cake that’s either chocolate or non-traditional.  The bride gets a beautiful typically light-colored confection while the groom gets to be creative.  Of course, at Altar Ego Weddings, we always think you should do whatever you want to do for your wedding, but we can share the traditions as well.  Follow us for a history lesson and then to see some of our favorite groom’s cake from over the years!  You won’t want to miss this!

From our friends at wikipedia, “The tradition of the groom’s cake began in Britain. The groom’s cake was often richer than the bride’s, since stronger flavors such as chocolate, fruitcake, and alcohol were considered more appropriate to “the stronger sex.””  Alrighty then!  I’m trying to think of a time when one of our grooms selected fruitcake in the last 10 years……or even had a deeper thought than, “oooh, I like chocolate cake, let’s have that.”  True, the majority of us, including us wedding planners, don’t know where the idea of a groom’s cake came from, but nobody ever got upset for having another cake flavor at a wedding!

Further, from Martha Stewart Weddings: “The groom’s cake eventually made its way to the United States, and its popularity has endured, especially in the South. Many brides find the groom’s cake appealing because it’s a way to give the groom special recognition on a day when most of the attention seems to center on the bride.”  That we can get behind.  It’s a lot of fun to see our brides pay special attention to exactly what their soon-to-be hubbies want in their groom’s cake.  It is true that a lot of the day is about the bride, so let him eat cake!  Your groom’s personality can shine in his cake!  Check out some of the cakes we’ve seen in the past!

We may be biased, but the first is our favorite cake, which was a giant Chipotle burrito.  Frosted Art in Dallas never disappoints!  This beauty was at Shannon and Nick’s Cityplace wedding!

Following the burrito, we cannot ignore the infamous Batman cake from Fancy Cakes by Lauren.  Did you know that only a few bakeries hold licenses to create licensed character cakes?  And how about this armadillo cake from Sugar Bee Sweets?  A Shiner cake from Sweet Treets, a Yeti cooler from Bluebonnet Bakery and a guitar from Sugar Shack Bakery for a musician groom!
